CHEER CHAMPION OF THE WEEK: WVU PCH TEAM

May 3, 2026

CHEER is proud to recognize the WVU Princeton Community Hospital (PCH) team at PCH Women’s Center as our CHAMPion of the Week for their commitment to advancing breastfeeding support and delivering patient-centered care. Serving approximately 1,000 families each year through its LDRP unit, PCH Women’s Center reaches mothers and newborns across multiple surrounding counties, expanding access to high-quality, compassionate care.

A defining strength of the PCH Women’s Center team is its investment in staff education and sustainable breastfeeding support. Through participation in CHAMPS National, four team members have completed the Train-the-Trainer program, building internal expertise and ensuring continued access to current, evidence-based practices. This commitment has led to meaningful improvements in care delivery, including sustaining an impressive average skin-to-skin rate of 95% over the past two years. Staff consistently prioritize uninterrupted skin-to-skin contact while completing newborn assessments, including in cesarean section settings.

The team’s success is driven by a strong culture of advocacy, education, and continuous improvement. Natalie Kemp, BSN, RN (Unit Manager), Courtney Moore, BSN, RN-OB, Brooklyn Mathena, RN, CBS (Lactation Nurse), and Cammie Woodyard, RN-MNN have played key roles in advancing breastfeeding education for staff and patients, ensuring families are equipped with the knowledge and support needed to meet their feeding goals.

The team lead, Natalie Kemp, shares: “This work is important to us because we are deeply committed to advocating for our patients and improving outcomes through education and evidence-based care. We believe in the proven benefits of breastfeeding for both mother and baby, and we strive to ensure our entire care team is equipped to support families in achieving the best possible start.”

CHEER celebrates PCH Women’s Center for its leadership, dedication to continuous learning, and unwavering commitment to supporting breastfeeding families and improving maternal-child health outcomes across their community.
