CHEER CHAMPION OF THE WEEK: TIEN DAO

Apr 6, 2026

From building confidence in new mothers to empowering care teams through education, Tien Dao, MSN, RN, RNC-OB, C-EFM, CBC, is making a meaningful impact at Waterbury Hospital’s Family Birthing Center, CT. As a Nursing Professional Development Specialist, Tien is passionate about breastfeeding, supporting maternal confidence, and making breastfeeding a normal, essential part of care.

Initially drawn to pediatric nursing, Tien discovered her passion for Labor and Delivery after being encouraged to explore the specialty. Since then, Tien has grown as a leader and educator by participating in skills fairs, becoming a certified NRP instructor, and leading high-risk OB classes and emergency simulations. She also earned a master’s in nursing education, equipping her to better support families and mentor nurses.

At the heart of Tien’s work is connection. She finds purpose in helping families move from feeling overwhelmed to feeling supported, confident, and understood. Sometimes, simply helping someone pause, breathe, and give themselves grace can make all the difference.

Tien shares, “Breastfeeding is not just a feeding choice—it is a journey that requires education, encouragement, and community support. When we empower our patients and their families with knowledge and compassion, we strengthen families and improve lifelong health outcomes for both mother and baby.”

Right now, Tien is especially excited about proposing a breastfeeding-focused skills fair for National Breastfeeding Month this August. Her vision is to bring together nursing, lactation, education, and leadership to create interactive learning stations, hands-on demonstrations, and opportunities for staff to build confidence and take ownership in supporting breastfeeding families.

We’re proud to celebrate Tien’s dedication to education, empowerment, and compassionate care as this week’s CHAMPion!
