CHEER CHAMPION OF THE WEEK: TAWANDA LOGAN-HURT, BSW, IBCLC

Apr 20, 2025

Tawanda Logan-Hurt, BSW, IBCLC, Doula, is dedicated to improving breastfeeding support and equity across Mississippi. As the newly appointed Mississippi WIC State Breastfeeding Coordinator, she is vital in shaping policies and programs that support breastfeeding families statewide. Before stepping into this role, Tawanda spent nearly two decades working in the Mississippi Delta as District 3 Breastfeeding Coordinator for the Mississippi State Department of Health.

With a background in social work, Tawanda became an International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) in 2022 and completed her birth doula training through DONA in 2024. She has been instrumental in advancing breastfeeding initiatives, including her work as a Hospital and Community Consultant with CHAMPS, where she provided technical assistance to Mississippi hospitals working toward Baby-Friendly designation. Through CHAMPS and ROSE, she helped establish Mississippi’s first Baby Café, which later transitioned into the Delta MS MILC League—an initiative now supported by the Mississippi Breastfeeding Coalition and facilitated by WIC IBCLCs and Peer Counselors.

A devoted mother of six and stepmother to three, Tawanda’s personal experiences inform her work. She breastfed five of her six children and now enjoys being a grandmother to two grandchildren. Her passion is ensuring families have support and resources to meet their breastfeeding goals.

When asked what she enjoys most about her work, Tawanda shared, “Helping families receive the assistance and information they need to have a successful breastfeeding journey and meet their breastfeeding goals is what I love most.”

Tawanda tells us: “Promoting breastfeeding and maternal and child health is a team effort. Everyone that touches the family needs to share information to help them have a successful experience. We all need to work as a team, on behalf of the family, to meet their needs so they can gain knowledge and make informed decisions throughout their journey.”

CHEER celebrates Tawanda’s leadership and dedication to maternal and child health. We are honored to recognize her as our CHAMPion of the Week!
