CHEER CHAMPION OF THE WEEK: SHURKITA JACKSON MCKINNON
Shurkita Jackson McKinnon has been a dedicated registered nurse in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Baptist Medical Center South for 13 years, providing compassionate care to the tiniest and most vulnerable newborns. In 2022, she expanded her role as a lactation educator, and by 2023, she earned her International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) credential—a testament to her commitment to helping families thrive.
Shurkita’s years of NICU experience have deepened her passion for supporting breastfeeding families and strengthened her dedication to lactation education. She partners closely with parents, offering knowledge, guidance, and encouragement that empower them to confidently nourish and care for their babies.
Shurkita shares, “What I enjoy most about my work is watching those ‘lightbulb moments’ when families feel empowered, supported, and capable in their breastfeeding journey. Breastfeeding nourishes both body and bond, giving babies the best start in life while supporting a mother’s lifelong health. Together, we grow stronger, healthier generations.”
CHEER is proud to recognize Shurkita Jackson McKinnon for her dedication, expertise, and unwavering commitment to supporting families and promoting breastfeeding in the NICU and beyond.
