GIANNA HAMANN

Meet CHEER’s newest team member and this week’s CHAMPion, Gianna Hamann! Gianna joins CHEER as a research assistant, bringing a passion for nutrition, food access and equity, and LGBTQ+ health.

Gianna previously volunteered with the CHEER International Group in Greece (CHEERing), supporting Grow Clinics, football (soccer) training, and health screenings. She spearheaded CHEERing’s oral health program, helping to assess dental health problems during health screenings and coordinating care with the Palestinian NGO SEEDS of Humanity Hellas. Additionally, Gianna helped to launch CHEERing’s Dental Days model, which involved transporting beneficiaries to dental appointments and mitigating other barriers to care.

“I was very fortunate to have the opportunity to work and learn alongside so many incredible people in Greece who are truly dedicated to supporting and improving refugee health,” shares Gianna. “I cannot wait to continue to work with CHEER stateside, and be inspired by leaders in breastfeeding and maternal-infant health!”

Gianna also worked with Madison Street Medicine while studying at the University of Wisconsin, providing direct healthcare to unhoused folks, assisting folks with getting health insurance and healthcare appointments, and running a blood pressure screening project. She is currently preparing for the MCAT Exam with plans to become a doctor.
