CHEER CHAMPION OF THE WEEK: AZA NEDHARI, CPM, LCPC

Jan 6, 2025

Aza Nedhari (she/her) is a mother, Licensed Certified Professional Midwife, Licensed Family Therapist, and the Co-Founder and Executive Director of Mamatoto Village, a D.C.-based nonprofit dedicated to improving Black maternal health outcomes. With over 20 years of experience in community organizing, reproductive justice, and program development, Aza is a fiercely passionate leader who believes in dismantling barriers to optimal maternal and child health through a justice framework. Currently pursuing a Doctorate in Human Services with a concentration in Organizational Leadership and Management, Aza focuses on the sustainability of Black-led organizations and developing innovative models for perinatal care delivery and workforce development.

“What I enjoy most is teaching, coaching, and pouring into people—seeing them grow, transform, and reach their goals,” shares Aza. “I also love the creativity and innovation that comes with testing new ideas, care models, and storytelling approaches.”

Aza co-founded Mamatoto Village more than 10 years ago after envisioning what she would like for herself as she began her journey into motherhood. Today, Mamatoto Village is committed to supporting Black women through their perinatal and postpartum journeys while addressing systemic disparities in maternal health. Their comprehensive services include perinatal home visiting, community doula care, childbirth education, lactation support, perinatal mental health services, and workforce development for maternal health professionals. The organization also amplifies the voices of Black mothers through advocacy and community engagement, striving to create a justice-centered maternal healthcare landscape.

In Aza’s words: “Maternal health is everyone’s responsibility! When mothers are healthy, the whole family and community can thrive.”

Thank you, Aza, for your dedication to maternal health. We are excited to recognize you as our CHAMPion of the Week!
