UNSUNG HEROES OF GREEK PUBLIC & GOVERNMENT SERVICES

This week’s CHAMPions cannot be named. But we are choosing to honor and thank the unsung heroes of Greek public and government services who help the CHEER International Group (CHEERing) as best they can, operating in a humanitarian, kind manner around the refugees we serve in Greece. This includes the long-time director of one of the ministry refugee camps, who has always been understanding and supportive of CHEERing and facilitates our work whenever possible. It includes several security guards at a refugee camp who interact so kindly with us and our beneficiaries, including the female guard who told one of our young clients what to do when she goes into labor – and added with a huge smile, “You will have a beautiful baby, I can already see it.” And it includes a train ticket collector and, we think, the entire staffing of a specific train line, who have agreed on a compromise around ticket costs for some of our football-playing children.

Most people in these positions get a bad rap, but for us, their humanity shines through, reminding us we are all just people and help can be found where you least expect it. We thank these unnamed CHAMPions on behalf of the CHEERing team and those we serve.
